Copilot Privacy Tips
Microsoft Copilot comes in different forms. Here are 5 essential tips to protect your privacy, depending on which version you use.
Top 5 Privacy Tips
-
Understand Consumer vs. Business Copilot
Free Copilot and Copilot Pro (consumer) may use your data for AI training. Microsoft 365 Copilot (business) has Enterprise Data Protection and does NOT use your company data for training. If your employer provides this, your business data is safe.
-
Turn Off Conversation History
In the consumer version, you can disable conversation history in your privacy settings. This prevents Microsoft from saving your conversations. Conversations without history are deleted within 30 days.
-
Be Careful with File Uploads
Files you upload to consumer Copilot are stored securely for up to 30 days and then automatically deleted. Avoid uploading sensitive business information unless you're using Microsoft 365 Copilot (business).
-
Review Plugin/Agent Access
Copilot can integrate with third-party plugins and agents. Review which plugins have access to your data and revoke access for tools you don't trust or no longer use. Microsoft 365 admins can manage plugin access centrally.
-
Use Business Version for Work
For business use, Microsoft 365 Copilot is the secure choice. It respects existing access controls, is covered by the Data Protection Addendum, is GDPR compliant, and data stays within your organization. The underlying AI models are trained, but NOT on your specific business data.
